hello mom, did u leave the door opened wide?

I was running late, its dark, its raining hard and  my vision of the road in front of me was pretty blurry through my dashboard. It all elevated my anxiousness up  to a higher note, just few minutes ago ,mom had been shouting on the phone, no ,shouting’s an understatement, hollering more like,

" When are you coming home? its NEARLY MAGHRIB , FOR GOODNESS SAKE!". I swear i could have felt the steam from her fury.

Well, at that point of time, the only comforting thoughts that i could gather is that she’s not exactly at home. She’s somewhere else, so i could buy some time to be prepared for her endless up and coming lecture.

By the time i parked the at the doorway, i felt that there’s something amiss by the look of my house.
the gate’s wide opened, so was the grill and the door was left ajar. Theres light upstairs but none downstairs. What strike me as odd was the family’s car was nowhere to be seen, an occasion that usually happens when everybody’s out.But someone should be at home right? there’s light upstairs, and its not natural for us to be as reckless as leaving the door unlocked when going out.

So, my first theory was, well, only dad and sis went out, but mom stayed back. Quite satisfied with my logic, i went straight upstairs, expecting my mom will be in her usual position come maghrib time( on her praying mat, clad fully in telekong), and i remembered how mildly suprised i was to  find that theres no one around upstairs when i reached the top flight.Nada.Only this time i was aware how eerily quite my house was.

My first reflex is to look properly in the master bedroom, just in case if my mom was playing hide and seek with me, maybe she’s just around the corner.( haha)

I didnt find mother but what i did find was an incredibly messy master bedroom, like those rooms when u are in the midst of spring cleaning, where you take all the stuff out and spread them on the floor.Thats how it was, the dressing table was chaos, with boxes containing brooches and jewelleries being tossed upside down. The wardrobe was totally empty, the contents being scattered all over the floor .The drawers was taken off.At first ,i seriously thought mom and dad decided to do a bit of room refurbishment but the particular thought was immediately erased when i caught sight of credit cards laying here and there under the bed.Dad NEVER leave his credit cards around.

A burglary had just happened here.Weirdly enough, theres still RM 100 note on the dressing table. The thief couldnt be THAT blind , could he?

I crept back downstairs oh-so-slowly , and went to the kitchen in the same manner. Good, the TV’s still here. Pausing for any noise, i reached for the light switch and carefully switched it on, as if i’m trying not to surprise anyone that might be lurking somewhere in the pitch dark kitchen.

Ok, coast ’s clear.I marched straight to the computer room( beside kitchen) and dialled mom’s number on the phone.

" Hello mom, do u incidentally left the door unlocked, the grill’ s opened wide and the gate too?"

" No, we locked the door honey"

" Oh. Do u know that ur room is in a mess? The drawers being taken out,ur baju is on the floor and dad’s card lying everywhere? "

Pause.

" Kaklong, leave the house now"

Those brief, firm and calm words from my mom somehow sent a chill down my spine. Scared, that would describe my state of mind.

I hung up and went for the car keys. I  closed the door and drove to the nearest surau to perform my maghrib.

" kaklong , dah boleh balik dah"

" Anything’s missing?

" Mom’s whole box of jewelleries, and the laptop"

" So it was a break in.Then why does the RM100 still there?"

" I dunno, looks like the thief left in a hurry, apart from the RM100 they missed, the other boxes of jewelleries are still here despite them situated just beside the mom’s box they took.Someones’ must have ruined their party. U should’ve seen what they did to the lock.

Someone’s must have ruined their party.

" Kaklong, mak rase the thief is still inside the house la when u balik.U dont left the living room light opened yeah?

" No, it wasnt me,i swore the light was out downstairs.Thank god i went out fast enough."

So, the rest of the night was spent on conspiring and scandalising what had happened just now, which each one of us contribute their own version of theory and twist. While my dad kept on looking if there’s anything else went missing unnnoticed.

As for my part, i was glad enough i was spared the lectures due to the slight,um, distraction.
